Severe storms brought significant flooding to Janesville and Rock County Friday night, quickly overwhelming roads, damaging buildings, and even causing a train derailment near North Washington Street. As conditions worsened, first responders moved fast, rescuing stranded drivers and assisting residents as rising water impacted neighborhoods across the area.

The scale of the response was significant. Between 5:00 and 9:00 p.m. alone, Rock County dispatch handled 724 calls to 911, a 392% increase compared to a typical Friday night. Emergency crews evacuated 11 people from flooded areas, using vehicles and boats to reach those in need. One of the largest rescue efforts took place at First Lutheran Church, where multiple individuals were helped to safety.

Despite the intensity of the situation, there were no reported fatalities, which speaks to the speed and coordination of the response. There was at least one injury when a train conductor had to be rescued from a derailed train and transported to the hospital, but officials expect a full recovery. Across the county, early reports estimate over $30 million in damage your community. Impact to local schools, roads, and infrastructure that are still being evaluated.

What stands out most is how Janesville responds. From first responders working around the clock to neighbors helping neighbors, this community shows up. As officials continue assessing roads, bridges, and buildings in the days ahead, the focus remains on safety, recovery, and supporting those affected. Janesville is not defined by the storm. It is defined by how it comes together after it.
