Some of the most important work in our community happens quietly. No spotlight. No big headlines. Just people showing up for neighbors on the hardest days of their lives.

That's Family Services of Southern Wisconsin & Northern Illinois.

Family Services' History in Beloit

Family Services has been serving the Stateline area since 1934. That's more than 90 years.

It began as the Family Service Association of Beloit, right in the middle of the Great Depression. Back then, the work looked like counseling for families hit hard by money troubles, child welfare support and even getting milk to school kids.

The tools have changed a lot since then. The heart behind it hasn't.

How Family Services Supports Stateline Families

Family Services believes every person deserves safety, connection and a place to belong. They help individuals and families dealing with poverty, trauma and instability.

Here's a look at how they show up:

  •   Defy Domestic Abuse Beloit. A 24/7 helpline, emergency shelter and advocacy for survivors of domestic violence. Lately they've put more focus on preventing homelessness before it starts.
  •   Sexual Assault Recovery Program. Advocacy and support for survivors, including bilingual advocates. It started in Rock County and grew into Green and Lafayette counties.
  •   Housing support. Emergency shelter, rapid rehousing and transitional living to help families get back on stable ground.
  •   Counseling and mental health therapy. Help for individuals and families working through trauma and tough seasons.
  •   Family and youth programs. Things like the Family Resilience Project, Youth2Youth4Change and a Mom's Group.

Next Steps: A Family Resilience Center in Beloit

One of the coolest recent projects is Next Steps, a Family Resilience Center in the former Royce Elementary School on Liberty Avenue in Beloit.

The idea is simple and smart. Bring most of their services under one roof so families don't have to bounce all over town to get help. The emergency shelter stays at a separate, safe location.

An old school building, turned into a place where families get a fresh start. We love that.

Why Family Services Matters to Our Community

You probably know someone who has been helped by Family Services. You just might not know it.

That's kind of the point. They meet people with dignity and privacy, right when it matters most. And they don't stop at crisis response. They also work with the community to stop problems before they begin.

That's what a strong community looks like.
